East Africa Drought Awareness Week

Hey everyone,
Our next project is the Drought Awareness Week, from Nov. 15th to 18th. The Drought in East Africa is not been getting much of a media buzz lately but there are still millions of people who still need help. The UN estimates that 12.4 million people are affected and it is the worst drought in 60 years! Currently, Kenya has the world's largest refugee camp on Earth.

We will be making posters, donation bins, and much more. Come to the meeting next Tuesday in room 243, at lunch.

Here are some basic facts about the drought:
  • the largest refugee camp, in the town of Dabaab, is home to 440,000 people, and is extremely overcrowded
  • most refugees are from neighbouring Somalia where 30,000 children under 5 years old have died
  • it is the worst drought is 60 years
  • it is effecting Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, and parts of Uganda and Tanzania
  • 10 dollars can feed a child for a month
